You are a Superhero!
Looks like you identify with the The Superhero type of Imposter Syndrome
The Superhero—Measures success by how many difficult tasks and roles they can take on, excel at, and juggle at the same time. Their “kryptonite” is allowing something to fall through the cracks as the veneer of being able to handle everything “with ease” falls away.
Here are five solutions for breaking free for “The Superhero” Imposter Syndrome:
- Rethink failure. Reframe it as a learning opportunity. I love the saying that there is no failure. I either achieve or I learn. Both have significant value.
- Invite feedback. This is vulnerable and exposes yourself to other’s potential criticism. The best way to become self actualized is to invite feedback. If this is a paralyzing thought, start with a spouse, best friend or mentor. Someone your trust. Once you feel comfortable with trusted feedback open it up to more people. Feedback is blessing because it gives you clear direction on how you can grow.
- Get a Mentor. Find a mentor or coach and ask them to keep you on track. Ask them for the feedback listed above. Schedule regular meetings with them so you can course correct before any problem gets too big.
- Take off all the hats. The Superhero loves to wear all the hats...and does so with pride. This is actually folly. Trust me I know. This is my type. While you are doing many things (maybe even really well) you are doing it at a huge opportunity cost. While you are doing something you are competent at, someone could be a genius at it. Stop lawyering, accounting, product managing, juggling multiple projects, etc. Be the leader and focus on What’s Important Now that only you can do. This way you can truly WIN.
- Three Daily “Must Do” Tasks. Put only three things on your “Must Do” list. Delegate everything else or put it on your “Need to do” or “Like to do” lists.
