You are an Expert Imposter!
Looks like you identify with the The Expert type of Imposter Syndrome
The Expert—Primarily concerned with what one knows or can do. Because the expectation is to know everything or be able to do anything naturally, anything that falls short of that is often seen as a failure. Remember Michael Jordan was not the greatest player to step onto the court the first time he picked up a basketball.
Here are five solutions for breaking free from “The Expert” Imposter Syndrome:
- Understand there is no shame in asking for help. Be vulnerable and find a trusted mentor in what you are doing to coach you. Get a coach or mentor
- Share your expertise. (don’t hoard it). There is a misconception that if others know as much as you your worth will be diminished. This is the opposite. The more you share and teach the more you learn. Your knowledge will increase as you share it.
- Stop comparing. Comparison is the thief of joy. Recognize the inherent and independent value of what you are doing regardless of what anyone else is or has done.
- Find joy in learning. If you are the expert and know everything then there is nothing left to learn...and there is always more to learn. Openly express your joy in learning and the truth that you don’t know everything.
- Say I don’t know. Being 100% the expert 100% of the time is unrealistic and inauthentic. Be a recovering Expert and speak the words, “I don’t know.” It is so refreshing and freeing not to have to know everything all the time. These three words won’t kill you. In fact your employees, friends, and family will appreciate it.
